The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) was founded in 1983 as part of the Foundation for Research and Technology‐Hellas (FORTH) (www.forth.gr). Located in Heraklion, Crete, IESL‐FORTH is the main laser research centre in Greece, with internationally established research activities in the areas of Laser Science including atto‐Science, micro/nano‐electronics, Polymer Science, Materials Science and Astrophysics. IESL, with support from the EC, has been operating as a European Research Infrastructure (ULF‐FORTH) since 1990, being currently a member of the LASERLAB EUROPE network of RIs. ULF‐FORTH offers a rich variety of state‐of‐the‐art equipment in combination with a wide spectrum of scientific expertise and has enabled European researchers to carry out forefront research in areas of frontier scientific interest, including research projects concerning applications of laser technology in CH science.

In the context of Cultural Heritage (CH) science (http://al5801.wix.com/lasersforartsake), a major cross‐disciplinary research program has been built at IESL over the past 20 years, linking advanced laser technology and cultural heritage. Highlights of this research include laser conservation projects at the Athens Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum (honoured with the 2012 Keck award of the IIC). As a member of the CHARISMA network of Research Infrastructures (RIs) for CH, IESL has been involved not only in joint research activities but also in training young scientists and conservators on the use of diagnostic tools and conservation methods based on laser and optical technologies. IESL‐FORTH is currently leading an initiative for establishing in Greece IPERION CH.gr a cross‐disciplinary Research Infrastructure, distributed across advanced facilities and specialized laboratories of proven scientific excellence offering access and servicing the cultural heritage (CH) research community.
